What is coaching?

Before we discuss what coaching is, we should explore what it isn’t. Coaching is not therapy, counselling, psychology, mentoring, or consulting and it is not designed to be prescriptive or give you advice. Coaching should not replace any of these practices if you feel that you require this type of support, but it can be utilised to further support you as you build the scaffolding you need on your healing journey.

Coaching is a tool used to assist you in creating change in your life, focusing on the present, identifying values and developing boundaries to move you from who you are today to the person you would like to be.

The goals developed within coaching can be focused on whatever you believe you need at this point in your life, these are items that are most important to you and what your heart and soul truly desire. These may be career, relationship, communication, health or well-being goals as a few examples or anything you wish to have in your life, the choice is yours.

Who do I work with?

As a survivor coach, I work with adult trauma survivors to support them in defining their values, setting boundaries and working towards their goals so they can live their lives beyond trauma.

You may be someone who resonates with the title of trauma survivor or victim survivor, though you also may have never thought about these titles before.

As a trauma survivor, you are someone who has experienced or been subjected to trauma. This may be in the form of child abuse, sexual violence, family and domestic violence, emotional abuse, or bullying. You may also have survived discrimination, illness or the impacts of relationship challenges.

I work with adult trauma survivors of any gender or age who are not in an active state of trauma and are on the stable footing required to work with a coach focusing on the present and working towards the future.

What is a trauma survivor?

Survivor
noun
a person who can continue living their life despite experiencing difficulties or a dangerous event. A person who continues to live, despite almost dying or after someone else has died

Trauma
noun
severe and lasting emotional shock and pain caused by a one-off or ongoing extremely upsetting experience, accident, illness, attack or injury

Some of us may not realise that we sub-consciously identify with the title of trauma survivor. Though we have not registered that we have overcome or lived through a challenging situation many of us have experienced some form of survival in our lives.

When we hear the title trauma survivor we often think of extremely difficult circumstances such as being subjected to abuse, having a near-death experience or overcoming a life-threatening illness. These are all common examples of what we think of when we hear the title trauma survivor but I believe that the title is subjective. As human beings, our emotions play a significant role in how we feel about surviving a moment in time or ongoing trauma.

We can experience deep life-altering emotional events that render us incapable of moving on for quite some time. The end of a relationship and the heartbreak that is intertwined with that experience. The death of a loved one again brings heartbreak and a deep state of grief. The isolation and sadness caused by moving away from friends and family. Or the anger and fear from the ongoing survival of being marginalised in society because of your gender, sexual preferences, disability, religion or race. These are just some examples of things we have to survive as human beings in today’s world.

Our experiences of trauma survival can completely redefine who we are. These experiences can at times cause us to become stuck or to connect our identity to the survival of the trauma, rendering us unable to move beyond this moment in time.

The title of trauma survivor may resonate with you, though it is more about the emotions and the impact they have on your life that I would like you to focus on. Titles don’t always serve us and can cause a further deepening of being stuck, so the key is to focus on the impact, where you are today and where you’d like to be.

You are more than your survival, it is just one piece of the greater puzzle of your life. I believe instead of focusing on moving on from trauma we can learn to move with trauma, reframe our lived experiences and begin to acknowledge the moments, impact and emotions as we continue to grow and change.

Why work with me?

My role as your Survivor Coach is to support you as you become the person you have always wanted to be. I will guide you through the process of setting goals and actions that are deep and fulfilling. Goals that are focused on the version of you that you’ve always wanted to be. It is an opportunity to begin to show up as your whole self and in that process to learn to let go of who you’ve been told you need to be, because of what has happened to you. For some time now, you’ve had big dreams for yourself, and the life you’ve always wanted. These dreams go far beyond trauma, far beyond your past, they are the dreams you can’t live without if you truly want to be the best version of yourself.

Together we will work on making those dreams a reality, I will support you to get clear on what you actually want, how to formula those desires into tangible goals and then how to intentionally take steps forward, by committing to actions so you can reach your true potential. In addition to working on your goals and actions, we will also discuss boundaries which form a vital part of survivor coaching for trauma survivors. In supporting you in defining and implementing your boundaries you’ll uncover hidden communication tools to enable you to ask for what you need and begin to implement key self-care practices.

I truly believe that you deserve everything your heart and soul desire and more. I don’t take my role as your coach for granted, I have been where you are and with the support of my coaches, I have been able to walk the talk, setting goals, fulfilling actions and creating boundaries that have helped me become the person I am today. I am living proof of life beyond trauma and I look forward to supporting you to create your life, beyond trauma.

ARE YOU READY TO LIVE YOUR LIFE BEYOND TRAUMA?
I’m ready to walk beside you.

Coaching with Caroline provided me with the opportunity to speak with someone who I believed would understand me on a deeper level. During our sessions, I gained clarity on how to best serve and connect with my community and more importantly clarity on who I am. Since coaching with Caroline I have found myself hearing my soul calling more and more each day and have taken actions that have been exciting, challenging and insightful.

If you want to work with a coach who truly holds deep space for you, then I recommend you reach out to Caroline and embrace the energy she brings to her coaching.

A few more questions answered

Though I support many causes and contribute to projects in advocacy work that are focused on child safety, as I coach I don’t work with children, I only work with adults. I do not work with people currently experiencing or being subjected to abuse or trauma. This active state of trauma requires a different level of support and intervention that I am not qualified to provide support. With that in mind, I also do not work with clients who require talk therapy or counselling focused on their past trauma. The coaching I provide focuses on the present and supports clients to work towards the future.
No, I do not have the qualifications to work as a psychologist or therapist.
Yes, though this needs to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Noting the above about being in an active state of trauma, some clients are no longer unsafe and are on a stable footing to work with me as a coach, and they also have a therapist who they continue to work with for their ongoing mental health support. This is something that can be discussed during a Discovery Session to ensure we proceed in a trauma-informed way.

As a life coach, I have studied with the internationally recognised Beautiful You Coaching Academy. Throughout my career, I have participated in various leadership, mentoring and communication programs that have formed the foundation of my work. In April of 2024, I will begin breathwork facilitator training to bring breathwork practices into my coaching in the future.

I am always looking for ways to improve my coaching skills and to enhance how I hold space for my clients, so this answer is ever-evolving as I continue to grow to support my clients.

Being trauma informed involves being aware of trauma and being mindful and sensitive to it in how I work with my clients. As a coach, I have defined that I am not a psychologist or therapist, meaning that I am not trauma responsive and do not work with clients in an active state of trauma.

As a trauma informed coach I am consciously aware that many people have an experience of trauma and may be impacted by those experiences in various ways. I understand that trust and transparency are important in creating a safe environment, though safety can never be implied or assumed.

My ongoing training in this space is not linear, as I continue to grow as a human and a coach I will continue to learn how I can support trauma survivors in a trauma informed way.

Though I have years of experience as a business owner and entrepreneur I am not a business coach. I have a deep respect for business coaches and will refer clients who require this type of support to other coaches in my network.
