Supporting Yourself Over the Festive Season

The festive season can feel like a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a time of joy, connection, and celebration. On the other hand, it can stir up old wounds, amplify loneliness or grief, and overwhelm even the strongest among us. If last Christmas had you focused on supporting others, this December, let’s turn some of that care inward. Here are practical ways to lean into self-compassion, nurture your wellbeing, and hold space for whatever comes up – with some journaling prompts and a soothing breathwork to anchor you.

Why Self-Support Matters Now

It’s easy to feel pressure to be everything to everyone at Christmas – to host, to give, to show up. But beneath that busyness, the part of you that needs rest, healing, or simply a break might be whispering or even screaming. Recognising and honouring your own needs doesn’t make you selfish. It makes you human.

Taking care of yourself isn’t just a luxury- it’s a necessity. When you’re grounded, regulated, and nourished, you’re far more able to show up for others in a way that feels genuine, not depleted.

Practical Ways to Support Yourself

Here are some concrete strategies to care for your mind, body, and heart through December:

  • Set Boundaries with Kindness
    • It’s okay to say no. Whether it’s declining an event or scaling back commitments, boundaries are a powerful form of self-care.
    • Make an exit plan for overwhelming events – know what time you’ll leave or where you can go to reset if things become a little too much.
  • Build in Daily Rituals
    • Schedule small, non-negotiable moments just for you: a walk, a cup of tea, 10 minutes of reading. Planning self-care helps reduce holiday stress and is a great way to set you up for the new year ahead.
    • Try simple relaxation exercises like breathwork or meditation when things feel chaotic.
  • Lean on Reflective Practices
    • Journaling can help you process complex emotions instead of swallowing them down. Not a fan of journaling? Just writing one word to describe how you feel at the start and end of the day could be all that you need.
    • Writing not your thing? Use the voice memo tool on your phone and chat to yourself. It may feel silly at first, but the free flow of your thoughts, or a little rant, will help you get things off your chest and feel lighter in the moment.
  • Use Breathwork to Regulate
    • Breathwork is a powerful, accessible tool to help calm your nervous system, release tension, and reconnect with yourself.
    • Here’s a free, gentle pre-recorded breathwork you can use that I recently shared on my socials. Feel free to save it to your phone and use it whenever you need. Listen here.

  • Reach Out (When You’re Ready)
    • If you feel loneliness creeping in, connect with someone safe – a friend, a peer, or a therapist. Unsure who to speak to, utilise some of the free services available in Australia:

Journal Prompts for December

These prompts are designed to help you reflect, feel, and make meaning of your experience this season:

  • What does resting look like for me right now, and how can I create space for it?
  • Which part of the festive season (people, events, expectations) feels hardest, and why?
  • If I were to gift myself something this Christmas, what would it be – emotionally, spiritually, or physically?
  • What does healing or peace mean for me at the end of this year?
  • What am I ready to release before the new year, and what am I hoping to carry forward?
  • How can I lean into gratitude without minimising my own pain or struggle?

The holidays can be deeply tender. You don’t need to power through or put on a brave face every minute. This December, invite gentleness into your own experience. Let breathwork be your anchor when it feels too much. Let journaling be your mirror when you need clarity. Let boundaries be your moment for peace.

Supporting yourself isn’t a solo mission. Reach out, rest, reflect, and breathe.

You deserve care – not just during the season, but always.

Sending you lots of love for the days ahead as we close off 2025.
