There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes of a big life change.
The announcement gets shared. The milestone is marked. People celebrate with you, or support you, or cheer you on from afar.
But what often isn’t seen is the invisible load that sits underneath it all.
And right now, I’m in it.
Over the past couple of months, our family has made the move back to Melbourne.
It’s something we felt really clear on. The right decision for our businesses, for our family, for what’s next.
But even when something is right, even when it’s chosen, it doesn’t mean it’s easy.
Because alongside the decision is an endless, and often invisible, to-do list, and that overarching feeling of doing the right thing, even when it’s hard.
There’s the physical side. Packing up a home. Unpacking a life.
Preparing our Gold Coast house for the rental market. Stepping back into the rental market ourselves and navigating new landlords (who, thankfully, have been incredible, something I don’t take for granted). Boxes, logistics, admin, forms, emails, keys, timelines.
The kind of work that is constant, necessary… and largely unseen.
And then there’s everything else.
Supporting my husband as he carries a full plate with the businesses we own, which is ultimately what brought us back to Melbourne in the first place.
Holding space for my teenage son as he starts at a new school mid-year, finding his footing, his people, his confidence in a completely new environment.
And then there’s Louie.
He’s been quite unsettled through the transition. Even though our furniture is in place and our familiar scents are starting to move through the house, there are so many new smells, sounds and an overall different energy that he’s still adjusting to, and it has required an extra layer of patience from all of us.
He’s also really missing our community. The regular pats, the interactions, the connection he’s so used to. As a working dog, he’s feeling that shift deeply and is more than ready to get back to doing what he does best.
I am also navigating my own grief in closing our studio on the Gold Coast, a space that held so much connection, purpose and community.
Trying to find moments in between it all to establish some kind of routine, some sense of normalcy, something that feels like us again.
This is the part of big life moments we don’t talk about enough.
The mental load.
The emotional load.
The constant background processing.
The way your mind never quite switches off because there is always one more thing to remember, organise, follow up or hold.
It’s not just what you do.
It’s what you carry.
Years ago, when I was running my organising business, I wrote about the mental load, the invisible workload that so many people carry every single day.
Back then, I was speaking mostly to homes, families, and the unseen labour that keeps everything running.
Now, I’m feeling it again in a different way.
Because big life moments don’t just ask for action, they ask for capacity. And capacity isn’t infinite.
What I’m noticing in myself is this quiet tension between wanting to move forward quickly… and needing to slow down enough to actually land.
To not rush through this season just to get to the “settled” part. To acknowledge that even positive change requires integration.
As we move into May, I’m gently shifting my focus.
Not to doing more, but to supporting myself better within what already is.
For me, that looks like:
Coming back to routine.
Not rigid, perfect routines, but simple anchors in the day that create a sense of steadiness.
Spending time with people who fill my cup.
The friends who allow me to exhale. To be myself. To not have to hold everything together.
Making space to honour what I’m feeling.
The gratitude. The grief. The excitement. The exhaustion. Letting all of it coexist without needing to rush it away.
And paying attention to the small joys.
Because even in the busiest, fullest seasons, they are always there.
If you’re in a big season right now, a move, a transition, growth, change, or even just a period that feels full, I want to gently remind you:
Just because it looks exciting from the outside doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy at times on the inside.
More than one thing can be true.
Be mindful of what you’re carrying.
Not just on your to-do list, but in your mind, your body, your emotions.
And where you can, soften the pressure.
You don’t have to do it all perfectly.
You don’t have to have it all figured out straight away.
You’re allowed to take your time landing.
Because behind every big life moment is a human being doing their best to hold it all
together.
And that deserves just as much care as the milestone itself.
